Arson Investigator Tom Derby

The LAFDHS Thanks you! Damron's Badge Comes Home
It's one thing to put out fires, and it's entirely another to determine how they started - and in some cases, by whom. The Los Angeles Times has published a wonderful story about LAFD Arson Investigator Tom Derby. It's a terrific read - and if you're interested in the history of the department, this is a story to remember. Note also the wonderful photo by our friend Harry Garvin, a motion picture cameraman who moonlights with the Arson unit.

READ STORY.

Nice job on the article, you captured who Tom is and to some degree why. I worked around Tom for about 25 years and enjoyed his personality and respected his competence.

Fire investigations are usually requested for a number of different motives, all as expected involving fire. Just about all scenarios demands the utilization of an expert fire investigator and requires searching through piles of charcoal to find out what triggered a fire.
